Fresno State’s Pat Hill headed to Washington?
Posted by Todd KaufmannNCAA College Football December 2nd, 2008Could Pat Hill be headed for greener pastures? Are his days at Fresno State over? According to Tom Deinhart of Rivals.com they very well could be.
Hill apparently interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at the University of Washington after his Fresno State Bulldogs were trounced by Boise State 61-10 last Friday night and he’s getting support from a big name in college football. Who is it you ask? It’s Nick Saban, head coach of the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Saban apparently has thrown his full support behind Hill and went as far as to talk with Washington president Mark Emmert and athletic director Scott Woodward who were both at LSU when Saban was the head coach there.
If Pat Hill does end up leaving Fresno State, who would be the names fans would float out there to take his place? You could look at one of the current assistant coaches, under Pat Hill, John Baxter who has been on Hill’s staff from the very start, though I’m not sure he’s the right guy to be the next head coach. If you want me to throw out a name, and this is completely from left field, but it might not be that far fetched. He was Fresno State’s quarterback in 1992 when the Bulldogs knocked off USC 24-7 in the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, CA, he also won a Super Bowl Championship with the Baltimore Ravens a few years ago…Trent Dilfer. I know a lot of people would laugh that off, but watch that name make the rounds and he might even get consideration. Will he get the job, eh, I doubt it but I don’t doubt that he’d have interest in coming back to Fresno.
Pat Hill should be Fresno State’s head coach through their bowl game, wherever that might be, even if he does land the Washington job. But after that’s said and done, look for Fresno State’s “Hot Stove” to really start heating up in a hurry.

I would like to throw a name out there. Bob Toledo from Tulane. He is the former UCLA coach. In 1997 he had his best season at UCLA going 10-2 with a Cotton Bowl victory over Texas A&M. At one point he even had 20 consecutive wins. With that said and his experience in college football he should get a serious look.

This is very interesting and something I am following closely.
In fact, I think the coaching carousel this off season will be great! Tennessee switching coaches, Weis staying or going, etc.

Kyle,
Weis is staying put.
Comment by Todd Kaufmann on December 3rd, 2008:
He may be staying put, but for how long? If Notre Dame isn’t convinced of Weis as he opens the 2009 season, they won’t waste time of getting the money together to buy out the remaining years of his contract.
As for Bob Toledo, I don’t think he’s someone Fresno State will look at, just because I don’t believe he fits the mold of a Bulldog coach. I definitely think Fresno State will look from outside the program. Also, don’t be surprised if some big names start to make their way through the rumor mills. I know the name Philip Fullmer won’t be thrown out, but what about Jim Fassell?

Bob Toledo will be brought in after the 2009 season to coach at Fresno State with either Pat Hill’s departure or firing. He’s a local product with roots in Tulare having relatives there.
Look what happened the last time Fresno State hired a former PAC-10 Coach in Jim Sweeney. They went on to win eight conference championships. The biggest moment was beating USC in 1992.
Bob Toledo will be brought in. He will immediately turn the program in to a contender in the WAC against Boise State. He beaten the University of Texas in the Cotton Bowl. UCLA had 20 consecutive wins under Coach Toledo.
I gone on to speak with Dr. Welty the President of Fresno State about the situation and he will give Coach Toledo a shot.

This is Pat Hill’s last game. Bob Toledo will end up here at Fresno State. I have spoken with Dr. Welty and Dr. Welty has said he will give Bob Toledo a chance.
The schedule is built so Bob Toledo can take this program on a run just like he did at UCLA. Ryan Colbur and Derek Carr will be returning next year so watch out Boise State. Bob Toledo and the Bulldogs are winning the WAC!!
