Kyle...let's cover Peavy first. The indications I got from people in San Diego were the Padres were asking way too much of the Cubs. San Diego had apparently given the Cubs a list of players they wanted in return and Chicago had to do the legwork with both Philadelphia and Baltimore to try and find those players. I do agree, however, that being unable to unload Jason Marquis was a big factor as well.

As for Teixeira, he's a good offensive 1st baseman but I don't see how anyone can offer this guy $160MM. If he gets that much, how much can a guy like Adrian Gonzalez get on teh free agent market, a guy who's not only smooth offensively but he's one of the best defensive 1st basemen in baseball. I wonder if he isn't next on the trading block when he gets too expensive for San Diego to keep.

Ugh, Peavy to the Yankees also? Meh.

From what I've heard, it sounds like possibly the Peavy deal was just pulled off the table temporarily due to budget concerns (Cubs switching ownership, current owners Bankrupt) and they couldn't dump Marquis.

As for Teixeira, that is a huge contract. Is he that good? I mean 160 million good? He's definitely an all-star, but I never thought of him in the A-Rod category.
