I don’t think you can say there’s one player that’s more important for the defending NL Western Division Champions. There are several key players that will make the biggest difference in the between the Diamondbacks defending their title and getting left behind.

Randy Johnson has to be the first player that comes to mind. He missed most of the 2007 after undergoing back surgery, but Arizona stayed strong without him. If he can return in 2008, 100%, he makes their rotation that much stronger. He’s still one of those pitchers hitters just hate facing.

The second name that is certain is ace Brandon Webb. Webb finished the 2007 season with an 18-10 record, a 3.01 ERA and a runner up finish in the NL Cy Young voting behind winner and Padres’ right-hander Jake Peavy. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the National League since he came on the scene with Arizona in 2003. His 3.01 ERA last season was his best since his rookie campaign when he finished 10-9 in 28 starts with a 2.84 ERA.

If I had to pick one guy that may make the biggest difference for the Arizona Diamondbacks it would be their newest acquisition, former Oakland A’s right-hander Dan Haren. Haren had an impressive 2007 campaign, finishing with a 15-9 record and a 3.01 ERA for the A’s. He comes to a very tough NL West Division, but could prove to be the one guy that could keep Arizona in front all year long.

What could end up hurting Arizona, however, is the loss of 2007 NL Saves leader Jose Valverde who was traded to the Houston Astros during the offseason. Taking Valverde’s place should be right-hander Brandon Lyon. Lyon was the closer for Arizona during parts of the 2006 season, but had his share of troubles closing out games. If Lyon can be the 9th inning guy Arizona needs him to be, this team is going to be a fun one to watch in 2008.
